Synopsis
Undaunted by fast approaching middle age, and with no plans for Christmas, Flo and her flighty, free-wheeling friend Alex take off for Morocco. On Christmas Eve they find themselves under a million stars, on camels at the edge of the Sahara. Alex cheerfully embarks on a fling with Omar, the good natured rogue in charge of the caravan. For her it is just another experience. For Flo, an undercover romantic, the magic of the desert is a life-turning experience. Her fears and doubts have vanished under the protective care and good humour of Jalil, her chammelier.
Her surroundings enchant her.
The two friends return the following year, and the year after that. Jalil is a desert man, he knows how to bide his time. To Flo's astonishment, on her third visit he declares his love for her. Flo is drawn further and further into Jalil's world; her own life in England a grey shadow, she goes to live with him in his kasbah home. To them the paradoxes of their cultures, creeds and colour are no problem, but Flo is always haunted by the gossip and conjecture of the outside world. Jalil, of course, knows that God is great...
