The Storyteller
By Don Mattera
Synopsis
To describe the depth and passion of Don Mattera's writing is no easy task. The Storyteller, at first reading is deceptively rudimentary, but closer reading reveals the wisdom, compassion and perception of a writer engrossed in plumbing the depths of his experience. Mattera is a writer who understands the essence of short-story writing.
It is perhaps wise to take cognisance of the writer's achievements both literary and humanitarian to understand the man fully. Perhaps better known as poet, Mattera has published Azanian Love Song and was one of seven poets included in Exiles Within. His autobiography Memory is the Weapon, was published internationally and he is the author of plays which include Streetkids and Apartheid in the Court of History. His play One Time Brother, was banned in 1984. He has prepared a collection of short stories for young readers entitled The Five Magic Pebbles, which will be published by Skotaville Publishers.
Mattera has been honoured with many literary awards including the Steve Biko prize in 1986 (Sweden), the Kurt Tucholsky World PEN Association prize in 1986, the African Writer's Citation in 1980 and the AIDA French Literary Award, also in 1980. He has been acknowledged for his philanthropic work by being awarded the NAFCOC Service to Humanity Award in 1990 and was nominated for the Indicator Human Rights Award.
The Storyteller will not disappoint. Its range of emotion, humour and pathos will ultimately provide a document of past injustices and future hope, which are the writer's concern.
