By Frances Anne Bond
Synopsis
Marigold Goddard has been married for twenty-five years but her home life is increasingly empty, without joy. She is therefore dismayed when unexpected redundancy forces her into early retirement. Her husband lan, a lecturer at York University, can easily support them both but he is too absorbed in his academic work to notice his wife's unhappiness, and Marigold finds herself longing for an escape.
Sheila Scott cares more about her husband, Mike, and two sons, Jack and Billy, than anyone else in the world. When Mike loses his job and their house is repossessed, Sheila struggles to keep her family together. She knows Mike must leave them in order to find work, but as his absence turns from weeks into months Sheila begins to lose hope.
Then extraordinary circumstances bring Marigold and Sheila together and the unlikely friendship that follows gives each of them renewed strength to face the future whatever it may hold...
