The Chinese Assassin

By Anthony Grey

Synopsis

Anthony Grey's 1978 thriller, The Chinese Assassin, centers on British Sinologist Richard Scholfield who is drawn into a complex international plot after a Chinese defector, Yang, claims to be the sole survivor of the 1971 plane crash that killed Mao Zedong's heir apparent, Lin Piao. Yang alleges the crash was a cover-up for a murder by a radical faction within the Chinese government. Scholfield becomes entangled with CIA and KGB agents as he tries to uncover the truth about the crash and a contemporary plot to assassinate Mao, leading him into a dangerous world of espionage.
