CAMPING in an ideal spot-on an island in a river - Pip, Stocky Wake and their scout com-panions looked forward to a holiday diversified by such pastimes as swimming, scrambling and smoking out a hornets' nest. These entertainments they certainly enjoyed, but in the middle of a sunny afternoon they chanced to hear a mysterious rumble, "like a muckle great witches' kettle bubbling on a giant hob", and from that moment the pace of their holiday adventure quickened through many a narrow escape to a tremendous climax in the depths of the fabulous "Rumbling Churn " itself. Behind it all loomed the dark bulk of the Black Rigg, with the red flag of danger fluttering from its heather-clad summit; and behind the Black Rigg was the equally dark figure of the sinister Mr. Surtees. At the end, however, the Cuckoo Patrol came out on top. In the clearing up of the mystery, a most unusual treasure was brought to light, and several personal problems finally resolved.
