The Workd of Greece and Rome (Penguin)

By J.M. Roberts

Synopsis

An Illustrated World History Book #3
This history of mankind from prehistory to the oil crisis of the 1970s is presented in eight volumes, each lavishly illustrated in full-colour and black and white. The author, J. M. Roberts, is an acknowledged expert on world history: in these books he compares and relates, in a highly original way, the different civilizations and ideas which developed in the world in each age, and so has achieved a truly world history. The series offers a unique and stimulating perspective on the past we all inherit.
The World of Greece and Rome tells the story of the Mediterranean Basin and the Near East from c. 500 BC to AD 500. It describes the development of the Greek and Roman civilizations which, together with the growth of Christianity, were to have a profound effect on the future and are the foundation of "Western' civilization.
J. M. Roberts was a Fellow and Tutor in Modern History of Merton College, Oxford from 1953 until 1979, when he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Southampton University. In 1976 his longer History of the World was published to great acclaim and was described by A. J. P. Taylor as 'a stupendous achievement".
