Jerusalem as Jesus knew it
By John Wilkinson
Synopsis
In this lucid and scholarly guide to the sites in and around Jerusalem that legitimately can be linked to Jesus, John Wilkinson provides not only the details of where events took place, but analyzes the reasons for their occurrence, drawing on research that combines a first-hand knowledge of archaeological discoveries with an interpretation of the Gospels and other ancient sources. Beginning with a brief look at Galilee, the life and traditions in the village of Nazareth and the site at Capernaum, where Jesus may well have visited and preached, the author then evaluates the cultural conflict of the Jews in Judaea, and the political position of Jerusalem in Jesus' day, when Pilate was governor. A plan of Jerusalem as it was then makes it possible to visualize the layout of the ancient city, while diagrams and photographs pinpoint the scenes of many New Testament events. The Temple, built by Herod the Great, was the focal point for Jewry during the lifetime of Jesus, although the powers of its ruling body, the Sanhedrin, had been curtailed. Against this background of religious and political unrest are placed some of the major events in Jesus' ministry: the teaching in the Temple, the healings at Bethesda and Siloam, the raising of Lazarus and the final entry to Jerusalem. The visitor to such sites and others - The Mount of Olives, Gethsemane, Golgotha - will be greatly enriched by John Wilkinson's insight and explana-tion of the Gospels as they relate to these places and events.
