The Death Committee
By Noah Gordon
Synopsis
A huge old hospital in Boston, grimy outside, inconvenient inside, existing chiefly for the city's poor; this is the setting of the most remarkable novel of medical life to have been written for years, in which the author of The Rabbi excels himself.
Adam Silverstone comes to it as Chief Resident and gets to know Rafael Meomartino who is Surgical Fellow, Spurgeon Robinson who is the Sur-gery Department's newest intern, and Harland Longwood-the Old Man-who is Chief of Surgery. Their careers interweave in private as well as professionally. Their loves, their mar-riages, the childhoods which shaped them, their women's backgrounds: all these contribute to the story, and all are vividly and deftly evoked; while the corporate life of the hospital-its routine as well as its tragedies and successes-never ceases to throb like some giant turbine propelling them on their way.
Adam has a vocation for surgery, and a driving ambition. He has to learn which to put first. Meomartino and Longwood have graver problems, the first how to deal with a nymphomaniac wife and with flaws in his own courage, the second how to face death.
And Spur Robinson has difficulties even more complex to contend with.
