For the Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of God

By Kathryn Spink

Synopsis

In 1948 a woman of courageous faith left behind her the confines of the Loreto convent in Calcutta and stepped out into some of India's most disease-ridden slums to live as one with the poorest of the poor and to found a new Congregation committed to their service. Today Mother Teresa's mission of love is a universal one. The founding of the Missionary Sisters of Charity was only the beginning of a development which was to include a similar Order for men, Contemplative branches of the two Congregations, spiritual links with over four hundred enclosed Orders of different denominations, and an Association of helpers, whom Mother Teresa termed Co-Workers as a tribute to Gandhi, who called his own helpers "Co-Workers" because they worked with him "for the brotherhood of man under the fatherhood of God."
"For the Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of God" shows for the first time the full dimensions of this mission, by tracing its development in terms of an unwavering trust in Divine Providence, from the commitment of one woman to the materially poor of Calcutta, to the love given by men, women and children of all nationalities and creeds to those suffering from poverty-be it material or spiritual-throughout the world.
In the mysterious and unbreakable link between faith and action Mother Teresa and those who work with her have found the most universal vocabulary for the most universally needed and universally acclaimed message...a message of love. The message of this compelling book is that where the love of God finds its expression in something that is the concrete reflection of the very best in human nature, then men of all creeds and convictions can recognise in it something which is needed by the brotherhood of man. This message is one drawn most effectively from the example of Mother Teresa and her helpers, whose works of love and peace have won the recognition of the world.
