SALVADOR DALÍ was without doubt one of the most inspirational and prolific artists of the twentieth century. Although his flirtation with Surrealism was relatively brief, he has become known as perhaps its greatest exponent, but it should be remembered that he also worked in many other genres.
Dalí's talents were prodigious; not only was he a painter of abstracts and portraits, a superb draughtsman, printer and illustrator, he was also a sculptor, a maker of ceramics, jewellery and furniture, and a costume designer. Above all, he was a consummate self-publicist, his moustachioed persona at times in danger of transcending his ability as an artist. However, it is quite likely that without this element of exhibitionism, combined with a healthy lust for commercial success, Dalí would not have been driven to achieve the international fame and status that he is now accorded.
